Why Choose Gabion Baskets and Stone Baskets?

Gabions are stone-filled wire baskets that can be stacked or linked together to form retaining walls, edging, seating, planters and more.

Provide excellent drainage, helping reduce hydrostatic pressure behind the wall

  • Close-up of a wire mesh fence covering a pile of rocks.

Are flexible and robust, ideal for Canterbury’s ground conditions

  • Close-up of a wire mesh grid covering a variety of rocks and stones of different sizes and colors, arranged in layers.

Use locally sourced rock, which keeps transport costs down

  • A metal grid covering a pile of various sized, smooth, rounded stones or rocks.

Deliver a natural, architectural look that works with modern city and rural landscapes

Gabion Works takes this trusted concept and refines it with a spiral-corner basket system that eliminates sharp edges, giving you a cleaner finish. Combined with our internal bracing system to prevent bulging, you get the strongest possible performance.

Gabion Works produce and supply custom gabion baskets throughout Canterbury. Every basket is made to order for your site, then delivered and installed to suit your design and levels.

Our baskets use:

  • Heavy-gauge steel mesh with a spiral-corner system for strength and a clean, architectural finish without sharp edges

  • Unique helical edge-jointing and internal partitioning for straight, stable walls

  • Internal bracing to prevent bulging.

  • A system designed to eliminate sharp edges, reduce slumping and perform well under seismic conditions

The result: solid, good-looking gabions that line up precisely and stand the test of time.

Our Process

1. Site visit & concept

We visit your property, talk through what you’re trying to achieve and look at the levels, access and ground conditions.

2. Design & pricing

We size the baskets, discuss rock options and agree on the layout. You’ll get a clear quote before any work begins.

3. Fabrication

Your baskets are made to measure using our spiral-corner mesh system for clean, accurate alignment and safe, smooth edges.

4. Delivery & installation

We deliver to site, prepare the base, install the baskets ready to be filled – usually with locally sourced stone to match your landscape.

5. Finishing touches

We can integrate planting, steps, timber capping, lighting or other landscape features as required.

Retaining Walls & Landscape Features

Gabion retaining walls are a great option when you want stability, drainage and visual impact in one system. They’re ideal for:

  • Sloping sections and level changes

  • Driveway or path edges

  • Terraced gardens

  • Boundaries and privacy screens

We can build low garden walls through to more substantial structures, and work alongside your engineer where formal design or consent is required.

Architectural & Garden Features

Beyond retaining, gabions make striking:

  • Feature walls and entryways

  • Outdoor fire surrounds (with appropriate fire-rated design)

  • Bench seats and outdoor dining plinths

  • Planters, tree surrounds and sculptural elements

Frequently Asked Questions

  • We primarily work across Christchurch and Canterbury, but can discuss projects further afield depending on size and access.

  • With quality mesh, correct installation and suitable rock, gabion walls are designed for long service lives. The main factor is the durability of the wire mesh – we use a robust spiral-corner mesh system to maximise lifespan while eliminating sharp edges.

  • In many situations, yes. Gabions offer excellent drainage and mass and are widely used for retaining and erosion control. For higher or heavily loaded walls, we may work with a structural engineer to confirm design requirements.

  • We usually recommend locally sourced stone that suits your design and budget. The rock needs to be the right size so it doesn’t push through the mesh or break down over time.

  • In New Zealand, retaining walls over certain heights or carrying extra loads may require consent or engineering. We can point you in the right direction and coordinate with your engineer or other contractors where needed.
